Hurricane Harvey Relief

church hurricane reliefAs many are aware, coastal Texas recently suffered its worst natural disaster in decades: Hurricane Harvey. Many are wondering how they can help, so here are a few tips:

1. Pray. Pray for access for relief and emergency workers. Pray that people would be rescued in a timely fashion and find shelter. Pray that Texas and Federal agencies would be able to govern effectively and provide aid with as little red tape and politicking as possible. More than anything else, pray that God would be glorified and that people are drawn to Him during this time of grief, mourning and rebuilding.

2. Stay informed. The news provides coverage, but there are also a number of people on the ground giving grassroots updates and advice on the most effective ways to help and pray. One that comes to mind is Pastor Ikki Soma, who leads City of Refuge Church (EPC) in Houston. Pastor Soma is active on Facebook and has a podcast explaining relief efforts and great ways to help:

3. Give. There is great financial need for those providing relief and aid and sometimes it is hard to know where best to give. City of Refuge, mentioned above, has a link for donating to flood relief:  You will need to specify “Hurricane Harvey Relief” in the drop-down menu. The EPC has also set up a designated relief fund on their website:  Again, use drop-down menus to specify “Emergency Relief” and then “Hurricane Harvey Relief (506)”. Additionally, any funds given to the church designated for Harvey relief will be passed along directly to appropriate channels. If you are writing a check, please include #4601 in the memo to facilitate the process.
